CAME has announced the KÖLER PRIZE 2011 nominees

From 1 May to 5 June 2011 each artist will present two pieces of work at the CAME- one from a previous exhibition and another that has been especially created for the Köler Prize.

The five artists, who are all permanently residing in Estonia or have Estonian citizenship, were nominated by the museum based on their creative achievements over the past three years. The international jury will select the winner who will be awarded 5000€, donated by private Estonian company Smarten Logistics.

A special public vote has also been devised in which visitors to the museum can select their favourite piece of work. The winner of the public award, sponsored by the new and ambitious Temnikova&Kasela gallery, will receive 1000€. Both prizes will be awarded at a gala on 28 May 2011.

The exhibition of the Köler Prize nominees opens the CAME’s European Capital of Culture year’s exhibition season.

The Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia was established in 2006 as an initiative of artists, art students, and curators to fill an artistic and institutional void in the Estonian art scene whilst offering an opportunity to promote contemporary art locally and internationally. The CAME building, formerly the office of Tallinn Heating, has been designed to move away from normative public institutions to offer a space that is truly alternative and counter-public, thus reflecting the exhibitions that occupy the building and define its goals.

Ultimately, the CAME want to occupy the lacking spot of a contemporary art museum in Estonia whilst constantly questioning what a contemporary museum is defined by: what denotations traditionally make a museum a museum and how can these be translated into the ever changing field of contemporary art.
