Drama competition New Baltic Drama 2011

The Tallinn 2011 Foundation and the Estonian Theatre Agency Foundation announce the Estonian round of Seaside Stories of the international drama competition New Baltic Drama 2011. The author of the winning play will receive 25,000 kroons and the winning play will premiere in 2011.

The drama competition was announced on October 7, 2009 and it will last until February 1, 2010 and will take place simultaneously in Estonia (Tallinn), Finland (Turku), Russia (St Petersburg) and Sweden (Stockholm). The winning play of every county will be produced in one participating country.

Authors may take part in all national competitions, but not with the same text. The competition takes place in two rounds (the first being anonymous) and there are no limitations as regards genre and length.

By taking part in the competition the author commits to completing the play if their synopsis is selected.

FIRST ROUND:

  • In order to participate the participants have to submit a presentation of the concept of their full-length play, which includes a short summary (maximum 5 pages), a description of the topic (an essay of maximum 2 pages), a description of up to 5 characters and two written out scenes.
  • The synopses in 5 copies and in digital form must be sent to the Estonian Theatre Agency Foundation to the address Tallinn, Väike Karja 12, 10140, the latest by February 1, 2010 (the latest date for posting the copies).
  • The competing plays must be supplied with a pseudonym and a closed envelope which includes the author’s contact information.
  • The local jury will choose the five best synopses by March 1, 2010 and the authors of the synopses will receive a prize of 5000 kroons. The synopses will be translated into English and will be sent to the international jury.

SECOND ROUND:

  • The second round of the competition is no longer anonymous.
  • The 8-member international jury (Estonia is represented by Anu Lamp and Eero Epner) will choose 4 winning synopses (one from each country). The main prize for Estonia is 25,000 kroons.
  • The full-length play, which is written based on the selected synopsis, must be completed by September 30, 2010.
  • The winning play of every country will be produced in one participating country.
  • The productions will be prepared by autumn 2011.
     

COPYRIGHTS:

  • The winner will be announced on April 30, 2010. The author will be informed personally.
  • Author's consent is required for presenting the text of the play on television, in the theatre or on the radio.
  • The author is entitled to pass on the text for use in suitable format after the play has premiered in the framework of the New Baltic Drama 2011 competition (not before 31.12.2012).
  • The remuneration for the copyright of the play is paid based on the standards of the producing country.
  • If a staging contract has not been entered into within 9 months following the completion of the play, the author may enter into agreements with a theatre of his/her choice.

  • Announcement of four winning plays: 30.4.2010
  • Completion of the text of the plays: 30.9.2010
  • Translations of the full-length plays: autumn 2010–spring 2011
  • Staging: autumn 2010–spring 2011
  • Estonian premiere: autumn 2011
  • Guest performances of the plays from all four countries in Turku: November 2011
