Easter and Spring Fair at the Estonian Open Air Museum

After fasting it is time to treat oneself with holiday foods made of fresh farm products and secure good fortune for the rest of the year by swinging!

The springtime food and handicraft fair offers different farm products, eco products, handicraft and plants. The varied cultural program treats the spirit and mixes our forefathers’ wisdom with introductions of modern customs: we get to see how farmers prepared for Easter in the 19th century and during 1930s.

Those who are planning to build a home can try their skills in Sassi-Jaani farmyard by making birdhouses or putting up a farmhouse’s maquette out of logs! At the same time there will be tours that introduce farm architecture. Easter eggs will be painted in the summer kitchen.

A planting school will be open for children in Pulga Farm. In addition to getting basic knowledge of gardening, young visitors can enjoy performances from children’s theatre Trumm. A play called “Roosad sokid” is about friendship, understanding and helping each other. Holiday cards can be sent in Kuie School. Kolu Tavern offers national dishes and instrumental music. In Sutlepa Chapel group Nolens Volens will perform runic songs. The Easter sermon will begin 15.00 and will be performed by minister Toomas Paul.

The swinging season will be officially open!
Since the Easter young village members started going to the swing. Several items were taken to swings and swing makers – red ribbons to the swing, garter or a bag of tobacco to the swing maker.

In Nuki Farm each visitor can contribute to the handicraft that will be made by crafters and later taken to the swing as a gift. Leigarid will perform on the swing place with the audience to officially open the swinging season with swing songs. Modern kiiking swings will be put up next to the huge farm swing.

In cooperation with magazine Kodukiri the Estonian Open Air Museum launches the campaign of collecting swing photos and stories! In order to find out how people have built their swings, the Museum is waiting for photos and stories of self-made swings. A web-based exhibition will be put up with all the photos so that everyone could see and find inspiration.
