England’s greenest band forages in Tallinners rubbish!
The band, who started playing together in 1993, promote sustainable lifestyles and recycling through the creation of music. In cooperation with the UN, Weapons of Sound have introduced alternative ways of making melody and have performed at some of the UK's biggest festivals such as Glastonbury and the Reading Rock Festival, as well as at Buckingham Palace and the Royal Albert Hall as part of the jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth in 2002.
Weapons of Sound will play on stage at Trumm-it Show on big percussion instruments that have been made of discarded barrels, pipes, sinks and other recycled items. It was a big wish of the band not to bring instruments along from home but to make new ones from Estonian rubbish.
The band members were impressed by the Eco-Island of European Capital of Culture. James Kimber, the bands founder, stated: ’It is inspiring to see such an environmental and cool thing in a centre of a European capital city.’ He complimented Tallinn 2011 for promoting environmental and sustainability issues.
Today (9th June), the Estonian Recycling Centre opened it’s doors to Weapons of Sound and within the next two days the band members will forage huge piles of rubbish for materials usable to make instruments.

On Friday, a day before the major concert, members of Weapons of Sound and Trumm-It Drum Orchestra will plant an oak tree on the Culture Kilometre. For years the members of the trash band have planted trees in UK towns before concerts to promote reducing CO2 in the environment. The young members of Trumm-It, who are also using barrels and canisters to play on, want to start a similar tradition.
“Trumm-It show“ takes place on 11th June on Tallinn’s Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square). The day kicks off at 15.00 with exciting and unique workshops held by Weapons of Sound, Massif Drum-Off and Universaal Universum. At 16.00 a competitive drummers solo competition will be arranged by “Muusik” shop.
From 19.00 on big stage there will be eclectic performances from Bombillaz, Toe Tag, Malcolm Lincoln, Weapons of Sound, Trumm-It and finally the world’s best drummer Jojo Mayer from Switzerland. The show will be staged by director Mart Koldits.
Entry: free of charge.
