Estonia’s Biggest Drum Orchestra Trumm-It Invites to a Party of Rhythm
A big party of rhythm will take place in Vabaduse väljak on June 11. During the whole day different rhythm themed workshops and competitions will be held. Various activities and performances throughout the day will be combined together by Trumm-It, the drum orchestra of young people put together thanks to the Foundation Tallinn 2011 and Tallinna Noorsootöö Keskus. Trumm-It has currently more than half a hundred active members.
Visitors can play African drums, percussion instruments made of garbage and improvise with well-known Estonian drummers and DJs. The music shop Muusik will organize a solo competition for drummers during which people can see and hear the best performances of young Estonian drummers.
The concert program will begin at 19.00 with performances by Bombillaz, Toe Tag and Massif Drum-Off. On the stage, which will be specially built for the Trumm-It Show and because of its special shape is named “The Mighty Crab”, people will see Estonia’s biggest drum orchestra perform with Malcolm Lincoln; Weapons of Sound, the professional garbage band from the UK who in cooperation with the UN introduced alternative music-making possibilities, and Swiss drum god Jojo Mayer who joined the Monty Alexander Group when he was young, has played at big European jazz festivals and made music with different legendary jazz artists, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone and John Zorn. The Trumm-It Show is being staged by the renowned director, Mart Koldits.
Trumm-It is one of the most important youth projects of the European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011. The drum orchestra started at the beginning of 2010 in different youth centers in Tallinn and in Tallinna Laste Turvakeskus and has given nearly one hundred performances in different festivals and other events in Estonia, Latvia and Finland. Inspired by the AfroReggae youth movement from Brazil, the young people learn samba and reggae music and the culture from an AfroReggae member, percussion player and teacher Francois Archanjo. Trumm-It orchestra plays on cans, canisters, pans and professional samba drums.
The Trumm-It Show is the biggest challenge for the young drummers yet and they have practiced for several months. More than 100 young people have participated in Trumm-It project during one year, concert group includes 40 young people aged 10 to 24.
The Trumm-It Show will take place in Vabaduse väljak on June 11. Workshops and entertainment programme will begin at 15.00, concert programme at 19.00. Free workshops will be organized by the Weapons of Sound, Universaal Universum and Massif Drum-Off.
The show will be organized by the Foundation Tallinn 2011, the foundation’s partners, PVX Muusik, MTÜ Eesti Pakendiringlus, Domina Hotels, Tallinna Noorsootöö Keskus and Tallinna Laste Turvakeskus.
