Estonian choirs have had a great success at the World Choir Games in China
As Veronika Portsmuth, the conductor of European Capital of Culture Mixed Choir puts it; all three choirs were very successful in the competition. By the number of prizes won, Estonia is the most successful choir singing country in Europe.
European Capital of Culture Mixed Choir was created for the “Song Battle” on the Estonian TV only a year and a half ago, where it reached the final.
The two gold medals are an extraordinary achievement for the choir. “On one hand we competed against choirs that have sang together for years, on the other hand great energy and willpower have always been characteristic for our choir,” Portsmuth explains the background of the success.
European Capital of Culture Mixed Choir was among five choirs that were selected to perform at the gala concert „Choral Fireworks“ in Shaoxing. The concert was transmitted by CCTV and reached hundreds of millions of people all over China.
The bright and successful performances have presented Estonia as a singing nation and Tallinn as the European Capital of Culture 2011 to tens of thousands of people attending the choir games and the nearby Shanghai EXPO.
470 choirs from 80 countries competed at the World Choir Games also known as Choir Olympics that takes place biannually.
