A Trumm-It orchestra is for many young people the only possibility to do something that will bring joy and recognition to their lives.

They can play the drums, perform, and make their own percussion instruments. They can experience care and support which might not be part of their daily lives and be confirmed that they are needed and waited for.

Just imagine what would it feel like to play the drums on the Town Hall Square and make hundreds of visitors of the city smile and dance with you! Music is a language that unites people independent of their origin or age.

Or how would it feel if you could perform to people of your age and show how nice drums you could build on your own or how cool pieces of drum music you could learn? What does it mean for a young drum player to make music with 50 Brazilian musicians who have turned their backs on to criminal street life and become an example to millions of youths all over the world?

It means new friends, interesting and versatile life, a possibility to move on and shape your future.

The supporters of each Trumm-It orchestra will be kept informed when and for which event their aid is being used.

Your possibilities to support Trumm-It orchestras:

Drums and drumsticks

The more percussion instruments the Trumm-It orchestras have, the more we can establish new orchestras and arrange performances. Durable drumsticks are almost a vital element for Trumm-It orchestras.

You may bring drumsticks and percussion instruments to the orchestras or donate money so we can buy them for the groups for favourable prices.

Trumm-It orchestras use:

• A5 drumsticks
• Surdo mallets
• Surdo drums
• Repiniques
• Djembes

Self-made fantasy-percussions

In addition to traditional percussion instruments the youths of Trumm-It orchestras will build their own unique instruments under the guidance of real drummers. Cans, barrels, or even pots and pans can be turned into percussion instruments.

Cans and barrels will be brought by the non-profit organisation MTÜ Eesti Pakendikeskus. The more different means we have for building percussion instruments, the more fantasy can be used for achieving the result. And the most important thing – these instruments will be used at concerts, too!

For making fantasy-percussions the youths will need:

• pots, pans, bowls and other containers (only new or carefully cleaned ones)
• ropes, strong belts which would not cut into the body (drums are worn both with a shoulder or a waist strap)
• cutting means which cut strong materials (e.g. thin metal, plastic)
• colours and markers, adhesive tapes which can be used to decorate metal and plastic percussion instruments.

Transport

Trumm-It orchestras can perform everywhere because we do not need any special conditions or sound amplifiers. The groups are ready to give inspiring concerts and teach drum-playing to others. Youths will give independent concerts and are also happy to perform at events where hot Brazilian rhythms and joyful dancing are expected. Many concerts are held in venues in the city area.

For concert activities, the Trumm-It orchestras will need transportation by bus for 20-25 persons and drums within the city of Tallinn

Clothing for performances and practices

The performance clothing of Trumm-It orchestras is always simple and stylish. Important features are comfort and the possibility to give young people some space for designing their outfit themselves. In drum lessons and rehearsals it is also important that clothing and footwear would be comfortable and durable.

In one concert orchestra, there are 15-20 members. For performances and rehearsals the youths will need:

• T-shirts in the same colour
• similar jeans
• similar sports suits for practice
• similar sports footwear
• bags for practice outfit

Workshops for the drum instructor of AfroReggae

A couple of times a year the drum instructors of AfroReggae will come from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Europe in order to meet youths in risk groups in England and inspire them to play drums instead of hanging around in the streets. We, too, have a unique possibility to call the teachers of AfroReggae to Estonia, so that they can meet within one week all Trumm-It orchestras and teach them new rhythms, dances and pieces of music.
