Highlight for innovative design fans Innovation Festival IF ... and Design Night start tonight
IF… is a series of festivals that values creativity and innovation and aims to present the most interesting success stories of different European regions, where design has actuated innovation and change, and to introduce the efficiency of cooperation between designers, engineers, businesses, scientists and students.
During 2 years six cities are involved in the innovation festival – Barcelona, Milano, Kortrijk, Lisbon, Vilnius and Tallinn. Each city has chosen a topic that is most relevant for the region, contribute to its development and innovation and design awareness. The aim is not just to show great design but also to contribute to the processes of the society like climate change, environmental pollution etc. The focus is on innovation and human oriented design, social inclusion, mobility, sustainability and influence of technology in everyday life. In the centre are a person and its needs.
The programme of Innovation and design festival is substantial as suitable for the European Capital of Culture. There are more than 45 events including conferences, workshops, exhibitions and else. The heart of festival is in Rotermann Quarter, all bigger museums, design shops and galleries around town are involved. Many events take place in city space.
The festival will open in Tallinn Design Museum together with an exhibition of innovation in Estonian design in 20th and 21st century. In Rotermann Quarter the results of the project Cities For All –Tallinn For All will be presented. During this project students worked on solutions to grant equal access to all citizens in cooperation with disabled people and mentors. The Architecture Museum presents an exhibition of one of Estonia’s foremost designers Tarmo Luisk 'Mäng Tulega' (Play with Fire). There is also the exhibition Fresh Estonian Poster and a large scale French design exhibition Saint-Etienne design - creative city for all by Cité du Design that focuses on urbanist projects.
In the first floor of Rotermann Shopping centre is Nokia lounge, festival’s centre for meetings, workshops, presentations and the IF…Corner, that introduces the best results of IF...Lab.
There is also a Lahti Biennale lounge to present Finnish design.
Also in the programme There is a design auction and Design Night Chat Room powered by Pecha Kucha as well as Design Night Club in the Estonian Design House.
A great example of experience design is the Malaysian- Danish Man&God exhibition that will be opened by a real buto dancer from Malaysia Swee Keong Lee.
The festival will open and close with a fashion show in Nisurukkiveski, there are also experiences in food design available in the restaurant Novell. The festival will close with a gala night of European Design Management Awards where European companies will be honoured for using design to obtain competitive advantage. Among the finalists there are two Estonian companies.
Many events will take place in the city space – Austrian design in Viru bus terminal, video installations by Polish artists, Passion for Light Guerrilla action and different exhibitions in the galleries, workshops and even wine cellars of the Old Town. On Freedom Square there will be a Gulliver Map, where everyone can mark their favourite places and obstructions on a giant map of Tallinn. The aim is to notice the problems of people with special needs.
