LIFT11 Installation 'O' Visited St Petersburg and Moscow Architecture Worlds

In addition, the Free Space invited the 'O' group to visit the Stalinist St Petersburg’s Narvsky district where it is planned to take down a green living area the size of 15 blocks and replace it with new apartment buildings. Thus the presence of 'O' symbolised the solidarity of young artists and architects towards the district's current inhabitants who are in danger of losing their homes and being forced to move.
From St Petersburg, the 'O' travelled to Moscow's design and architecture world's Strelka Institute, which brings international and fresh ideas and where on July 25 ''Project Baltia'' organised a presentation and lecture evening.
The 'O' searches its meaning from the surrounding space and inside the heads that feel it, appearing mostly without warning into public space. The installation is a black balloon with a 5 meter diameter and it is so light that it can float on water or move with the wind.
Depending on its location and context it can be an obstacle full of everyday bustle, a child friendly and sporty toy or a critical comment to its surroundings. The fact that it can have so many different meanings is why the 'O' interests people despite their nationality, age and education. The authors of 'O' are architects Aet Ader, Kaarel Künnap, Grete Soosalu and artists Flo Kasearu and Andra Aaloe.
'O' can be found:
August 7 at 14.00 Tallinn Zoo
August 9 at 17.00 Islandi Väljak
August 18 at 14.00 Pikk Jalg
August 27 at 17.00 Kalev Stadium
The city installations festival LIFT11 activates Tallinn's public spaces from June 5 until October 1, 2011. The festival is part of the European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011 programme and it is organised by MTÜ KAOS.
