In 2009 Estonia took part at the Europe-wide museum night for the first time to celebrate the year of museums. This year’s theme of the Museum Night - „Treasure of the Night“ is connected to the European Capital of Culture. Ancient treasures found at the bottom of the sea or below ground usually are kept at museums today, but it’s not just gold and silver coins that are treasures – it’s also our cultural heritage as such. The aim of the Museum Night is during one special night to offer a chance to discover treasures from ancient and exotic layers of history as well as more contemporary and casual layers.

In addition to free entry during this night museums also offer special programmes and activities. The Museum Night programmes of the participating establishments can be found on oo.muuseum.ee. Estonian Museum Society assures that until last moment new institutions have applied to join the project and hopes that there will be lively interest from the public.
