Today, on 22 December the performance of the unique musical composition “Song of the Tower Bells” and the following concert will be concluded by a fire show on Harju Hill (Harjumägi). The burning of the fire sculpture “2011“ will celebrate the darkest night of the year and the end of the European Capital of Culture year.

The year as European Capital of Culture in Tallinn will finish on 22 December with an intense programme at the seashore and in city centre. As part of ’Happy End’ a unique one and only screening of ’60 Seconds of Solitude’ will take place at Tallinn harbour, a new composition by Margo Kõlar ’Song of the Tower Bells’ will sound on Freedom Square accompanied by a 3D video projection on the facade of St John’s church.

On the 29th of September 2011, the documentary film «The Detour» by Atelier Limo started its tour around the Gulf of Finland in the port area of Tallinn. About 70 people gathered for the premiere in Terminal A which had been transformed for the occasion into a great projection room.

From this week Kumu art museum presents the personal exhibition of one of Estonia’s internationally best known artists Ene-Liis Semper. The exhibition is a synthesis of room installation and video art. As a part of Design Night festival, the results of the project “Cities for All – Tallinn for All” were presented yesterday on September 20 and the works were evaluated by a jury.
The ideas were evaluated by an international jury who selected the winner. The first and the second prize were divided between the Tallinn public transportation project and Gulliver Map. The third prize was given to the project of visual aids for the blind.

From September 21-25 five children and youth choirs from Japan will visit the European Capital of Culture Tallinn. The choirs come from the city of Sendai, from the area, which was damaged the most in the earthquake and tsunami in spring. The choirs are accompanied by the delegation of cultural benefactors, who in addition to meeting the Culture Capital team, will also meet with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications and Tallinn City Government.

Song of Freedom celebrates two important events: it is the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Estonia’s independence on 20th August while Tallinn wears the title of European Capital of Culture. One aim of Song of Freedom is to say thank you to countries that bravely recognized Estonia’s independence 20 years ago. Special thanks and attention goes to Iceland that recognized Estonia in 1991 as the first country. To celebrate this and also to open the Iceland Day that takes place all over Tallinn on 21 August, Iceland’s President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson will address the public at Tallinn Song Festival grounds.

The people of Estonia are celebrating two important events this year – the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the country’s independence on 20 August, and the year-long celebrations in Tallinn as the proud holder of the title of European Capital of Culture. In order to make both more memorable and to thank those nations who were quick to recognise Estonia’s independence in 1991, a concert entitled ‘Song of Freedom’ will be held at Tallinn’s Song Festival Grounds on 20 August.

Maritime Days breathe new life into Tallinn’s waters

Tallinn’s Maritime Days festival, which came to a close late last night with a Geriljakino screening on the roof of the Linnahall building, saw three of the capital’s ports and harbours crowded with citysiders – who had come to take a look at the boats and ships on display, enjoy the sights of the Cultural Kilometre and attend the concerts taking place as part of the festival. As expected, the Krusenstern proved to be its most popular attraction, with 18,000 people admiring the vessel.

On 20-28 August 2011, thousands of Estonian folk dance enthusiasts will perform a relay dance, with different groups dancing non-stop for eight days and nights, covering all Estonia’s counties. By doing this every dancing couple will add their own line to this story. More than 6200 participants have signed up involving members of over 450 folk dance groups.

A happening opened NO99 Theatre’s Straw Theatre on 30 April. Theatre NO99 has put on one-time happenings before in its large hall and has created them on the principle that the event would be sensitive in terms of time and place, and that its poetry would lie in the moment: it is not possible to repeat it any more anywhere else nor at any other time. The play "How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare" of Theatre NO99 will be performed with a simultaneous translation into the English language. This one time event will take place on November 3rd. The play has received several awards in Estonia (the best play of the season by Estonian theatre critics) and abroad.

As part of Tallinn 2011, 52 weeks, from Tuesday 19th Oct till Friday Oct 22nd we will be making cup art with local artists and anyone else who wants to join in outside EKKM, near Linna Hall from 5pm each evening until the fence is stitched at Põhja pst 35. Local artists include Okeiko, Marika, Multistability Crew, Team Tallinn 2011 and others.

European Commission Directorate-General for Education and Culture has assured that Tallinn 2011 will receive the 1.5 million euro Melina Mercouri prize in a letter sent to the foundation Tallinn 2011, the Ministry of Culture of Estonia and the city of Tallinn.

Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia CAME will open the exhibition Next to Nothing on Friday the 23th of July presenting works by fifteen artists (videos, installations, photos, paintings, objects), that test the mental and physical standing power of CAME against attacks from the „white-cube art“ and vice versa. There will be works from three artists from outside Estonia, among them most notably Martin Creed from the UK.

Estonian choirs won prizes at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China – Estonian National Television’s Girls Choir won the main prize amongst children’s choirs; European Capital of Culture Mixed Choir won two gold diplomas in the open competitions of mixed choirs and modern music; Turba girls choir won a silver diploma in folklore category.

„Katusekino“ or Rooftop Cinema opened its doors for the first time in Tallinn as part of European Capital of Culture 2011 programme on the roof terrace of Viru Keskus. The competition organised by the Tallinn 2011 foundation for advertising students and young advertisement designers has been won by Ingmar Niklus and Ilmar Kurvits for their work titled ‘Cultural therapies’. The winners will represent Estonia at the end of the month at the Eurobest advertising festival in Amsterdam.
Former seaplane hangars to become new home for Lembit submarine

The seaplane hangars at the Lennusadama port in Tallinn owned by the Estonian Maritime Museum are themselves to become a museum whose central exhibit will be the submarine Lembit. Having stood empty for years, the hangars will be fully renovated by 2011. The Maritime Museum will be revealing its plans to the public on 22 September.
European Film Academy to meet with organisers of 2010 European film gala in Tallinn

Tallinn Maritime Days is the most important event in the coastal area of our capital. Tallinn Maritime Days 2009 will take place in the Admirality Basin and Seaplane Harbour which is connected by the future sea promenade (or the so called „Culture Kilometre“) and boat trips between the two harbours. Maritime Days will involve substantial maritime and harbour related programmes, concerts, boat trips, water related attractions and performances.

In June, Tallinn organises Maritime Days directed to all citizens and visitors of Tallinn, hoping that this will become an annual tradition.
