Norwegian festival celebrates Veljo Tormis
Punkt festival that will be staged in Kristiansand for the sixth year has become known in the world through its special concept. Brian Eno who participated a few years ago has named Punkt festival one of his best festival experiences. Leading figures of Norwegian electronic music Jan Bang and Erik Honore have created an environment where concerts will be followed by a live-remix of the concert attended by the audience and the musicians who just performed. Music by Veljo Tormis performed by „Noorus“ will be remixed by a renown Norwegian vocalist and composer Maja Rajtke whose experimental music has been published by Tzadik, Rune Grammofon and ECM record labels. The programme of this year’s Punkt is very representative. Once again Jon Hassell, one of the most influential trumpet players and innovators from the US will be performing as well as the first lady of Norwegian impro music Sidsel Endresen together with the young generation Norwegian guitar experimenter Stian Westerhus, legendary Supersilent, rock group Sereena Maneesh, trumpet player Nils Petter Molvaer with his new trio, guitar virtuoso Knut Reiesrud and bass player and composer Skuli Sverrisson from Iceland. In the seminar programme of the festival we can find the renown jazz critic Stuart Nicholson from the UK and Karl Bartos known from Kraftwerk, Germany.
The participation of Veljo Tormis and „Noorus“ at the Punkt festival in Kristiansand opens up a cultural bridge between the Norwegian musicians and the European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011. In April 2011 Punkt festival will take place within the International Jazz Festival Jazzkaar in Tallinn, with best known Norwegian improvisers remixing the works of Estonian composers, among them also music by Veljo Tormis. The year 2011 will bring other cooperation projects between the artists of Norway and Estonia that will be published with the finalised programme of Tallinn 20011.
The project is being supported by Foundation Tallinn 2011, Eesti Kultuurkapital and Elion.
