The Kumu ÖÖ festival will bring experimental music from all over Europe to Tallinn

Opening at 9pm, the festival will take over the ground floor of Kumu as well as its fifth floor exhibition space, thus taking full advantage of the museums size and its wealth of facilities. The vibrant music programme will occupy three stages: the exhibition hall will host live bands; the entrance hall will present an exhilarating mix of experimental dance music, whilst the Kumu auditorium will be turned into an intimate performance space. Meanwhile, the Tuborg Green Bar in Kumu’s giant elevator will take visitors to the ‘gateways’ exhibition on the fifth floor. Finally, the garden will be turned into a tranquil café and bar.

German post-techno duo Mouse on Mars is headlining this year’s music events with their unique brand of techno, dub and rock. In 2007, the band surprised their fans and the music press alike with a collaborative project with punk legend and frontman of The Fall, Mark E. Smith. For their set at Kumu ÖÖ the duo will introduce new tracks from their eagerly awaited forthcoming album, which is released later this year. Joining them are London based dreampop electronica band Seefeel, who earlier this year released a critically acclaimed, self-titled album after 5 years of silence under the Warp label.

Support will include Andrew Hung of Bristol modern noise duo Fuck Buttons, Russian electronica artist Mujuice, Swedish indie punk band Thus:Owls, Manchester based experimental dance star Illum Sphere, Estonian multi-instrumentalist Multiphonic Rodent, Finnish psychedelic indie-pop artist Eleanoora Rosenholm and German producer and composer Marsen Jules. Finally, Maria Minerva will be presenting her lo-fi brand of pop in what will be her only live performance in Estonia this summer.

Meanwhile up on the fifth floor, visitors can experience the international digital art exhibition ‘Gateways. Art and Networked Culture’ (curator Sabine Himmelsbach, Germany). The exhibition, which is centred on a range of innovative artists presenting work that utilises new technology, includes a water curtain that presents graphic information and (quite literally) snail mail. Furthermore, on the roof of KUMU there will be a message for Google Earth and a classic Christina Kubisch sound project that allows the spectator to listen to new sounds derived from our city environment.
Tickets for KUMU ÖÖ will be on sale from 4 May in Piletilevi and Ticketpro. Price: 15-25 EUR.
