With the support of the Ministry of Culture of Brazil and the Embassy of Brazil in Helsinki, Weldson Archanjo from Rio de Janeiro will be in Estonia in 2010-2011 and shall instruct all the orchestras of Trumm-It. Weldson has himself participated in the work of AfroReggae, played in many well-known orchestras in Brazil and taught playing of percussion instruments. He has studied the building of percussion instruments and film sound editing in Rio De Janeiro Conservatoire.
Where can I get information about the concerts of Trumm-It orchestras?
The Trumm-It orchestras start active concert activities as soon as they have learned their first programme. News about performances is published from April on the webpage of Trumm-It, and in Facebook.
How many members does a Trumm-It orchestra have?
In one orchestra, there are 20-25 boys or girls. A concert team of an orchestra is made up of 15-18 young percussion players.
There may be also younger members, but in that case the whole orchestra should be in the same age group.
Which instruments do the Trumm-It orchestras use?
As regards original instruments, the “drum fleet” of the orchestras will comprise Brazilian drums, but most of the instruments will be made by the youths themselves. Making of drums is an activity full of fun and fantasy, because you can make a rhythm instrument out of every container, be it a pot, pan, can or even a plastic bottle. Each drum will be stylish and unique!
How much musical background should a member of a Trumm-It orchestra have?
Previous knowledge about playing drums and about music in general is not important because making and playing instruments is taught on the spot. The pieces of music will be learnt in drum lessons under the guidance of experienced teachers. In addition, professional drum players will introduce different percussion instruments, rhythms, and styles of music.
Young people will have a possibility to meet Estonian best-known drummers, and from time to time they will be visited by musicians from abroad.
Is it necessary to have special clothing for the lessons and performances of Trumm-It orchestras?
It is important that your clothes and footwear enable moving and are comfortable, because in addition to playing drums, dance steps will be taught, which are part of Brazilian drum-playing traditions.
For performances, the orchestras will have special clothing and footwear provided by the Tallinn 2011 Foundation and supporters, because stylish appearance adds colour and energy to the shows of the orchestra.
Is participation in Trumm-It orchestras free of charge?
For youths, participation in Trumm-It orchestras will be 100% free of charge. In addition, so-called open workshops with a participation fee will be held.
Through this we can arrange more performances for the orchestras, buy new drumsticks and drums, interesting clothing for shows, etc. More information about the workshops is available on the webpage of the project and in Facebook.
Why do the orchestras of Trumm-It learn Brazilian rhythms, while the music of other countries could also be taught?
Brazilian music has found its way to our people’s hearts. Colourful and dynamic rhythms, joyful energetic pieces of music and sunny enthusiasm are attractive elements of Brazilian music, independent of your cultural background or the place where you live. Indeed, music is a language whose beauty and message are understood through rhythms and melodies independent of your age and previous knowledge.
The concept of Trumm-It orchestras does not exclude learning the music and rhythms of other countries, but in 2010 and 2011 the main focus is on Brazil and its music, as we have tight cooperation with a Brazilian group AfroReggae and we have Brazilian musicians in Estonia who are ready to cooperate with our young people and social workers.
In 2011, the youths will also have an opportunity to participate in a performance with a AfroReggae group that will visit Tallinn during its tour.
