World of Glass

Terje Isungset – Arve Henriksen “World of Glass” (Estonia-Norway)

European Capital of Culture 2011 presents:

20th December at 19.00 in Von Krahl Theatre
21st December at 19.00 in Von Krahl Theatre
The concert will be recorded, those who are late will not be allowed into the theatre.

During Christmas, a rare and fragile glass world will open in Tallinn – for the first time the glass instruments made by Estonian glass artists and the students of glass art from the Estonian Academy of Arts will reach the stage.

“World of Glass” introduces the audience more than 30 fantasy instruments made of glass and the musicians will give two unique concerts with these instruments. Fairy-tale rhythm patterns and meditative melodies will be created on two nights by the most interesting representatives of Norwegian improvisational music: trumpeter Arve Henriksen and percussion virtuoso Terje Isungset.

Arve Henriksen is one of the hottest names on European jazz stages. Only this year Henriksen has earned several jazz awards, including the prestigious Paul Acket award in North Sea Jazz. His music is released by the exclusive Rune Grammofon and ECM. Henriksen’s trumpet music and singing has been recorded on more than 110 records. Although Henriksen is mostly known as a jazz musician, he plays in various groups that make music from modern classical to old style.

To one of the most innovative percussionists in Europe, Terje Isungset, there are no limits in the world of rhythm, although Isungset’s roots are in Norwegian folk music and jazz. Whether it is ice, wood, rocks, horns or glass – he makes it a unique instrument. In January every year glass instruments are made in Northern Norway under the guidance of Isungset for the Ice Music Festival.

Whispers, skirls and soughs are born in Isungset’s music in a way that it is hard for the audience to differ how much did they hear the musician’s voice and how much the instruments. As a composer, Isungset has made music for nearly 30 dance and theatre performances, also to films.

In Tallinn, Henriksen and Isungset will only play on glass instruments.
